Summer 2023 Artist in Residence

“Having the support of an urban residency will provide me the time and resources to explore new insights into my creative work. Not only will I be able to better understand my artwork from my past by also the ways that my practice is shaping my future..”

-Dominique Moody, Summer 2023 AiR

Artist Statement

My deepest desire is to create. It is through this fluent language of art that I can share this sacred space. This is where my altered vision speaks to other kindred hearts. My visionary work begins when I find an object that is more than a discarded relic of our economic consumption.

Within a moment of touch, my mind’s eye transforms these finds into treasured talismans embedded with narrative memory. The finding of these uncommon colored stones, broken shells, torn papers, old photos, weathered wood and tattered cardboard, as well as patina metal scraps and glass bottles becomes my medium of social art practice. When I assemble this eclectic mix into multilayered constructions, I make visible my dreams, memories and visions. In conjunction to my introspective muse, my works also reflect the social challenges of our times.

These configurations manifest as portraits and shelters that reveal their hidden stories. While these pieces were inspired by my own personal journey, they welcome the call and response of those who encounter them. I invite you to gaze upon the collaged surfaces of faded photos or composed text and be drawn into exploring the mystery of the interiors. Within these layered structures are the passages of a contradictory world, that allows us to rethink our sense of place.
